we love fast food

So I recently got a job at this new fast food restaurant that hasn't even opened yet in Orillia, called Extreme Pita. I had my orientation yesturday, and my first day of training is tomorrow. All of the new employees got to look around the restaurant and see how things would be done.
When I decided to put in my application for this place, I imagined it might be different from most of the other high calorie, high fat, pretty disgusting restaurants in this town. Turns out its not much different, you can check out the stats here: http://www.extremepita.com/food/CDN-nutritional-poster.pdf
Now I don't know if I'm going a bit psycho here, or if I even have a footing on what I'm talking about. Do you worry about little things that might happen in the future, like you know obesity, diabetes, and heart attacks.

[Obesity is] one of the most tragic, costly, and preventable public health problem facing this country today. An epidemic of obesity that drains our economy of billions of dollars annually in direct medical expenses, disability and lost productivity, and ... together with a sedentary lifestyle contributes to over three hundred thousand excess deaths each year. Next to smoking, obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
-- George L. Blackburn, M.D., President, American Society for Clinical Nutrition

These are some of the leading causes of death in North America, but it just seems to me our generation prefers to fuel the fire rather than do anything about it.

Is this just a scenario where you think, oh that won't happen to me ? Or do you think that you won't let it get that far? Do you even think this is a problem?

  1. I totally think it's a case of us being young and reckless, I mean, not totally reckless in all cases but believing we're invincible. We plan out all this great stuff to do in our futures, but we never think about all the things we need to do now so that we can be healthy and fit to be able to do all the awesome things we want to later on in life. I know I fall into that trap, thinking I'm young and nothing can really happen to me. Sometimes I think about it and it scares me. There's always that saying about living in the moment, so for now I guess I'll just stick to that, but while still keeping my future in mind.

  2. I think that the younger we are when we become active, the more easier to is for us to maintain that level of fitness. If we eat right, and exercise regularly while we're young, then we'll find it so much more easier to continue this routine when we are older. Plus, we'll be able to pass this on to future generations.

I think that many people our age think that because we're young and healthy right now, it won't hurt us as much if we eat unhealthy junk food regularly. When in reality, we should really be trying to eat as healthy as possible to stay healthy.

  3. Do I personally think fast food restaurants having loads of delicious crap that will clog my arteries is a problem? No, because I'm an active young lad and it's not hard at all to stay active and eat right when I'm not at McDonalds or wherever. It's hard to be obese, and despite what people say about, "It's in people's genes.", that probably just applies for maybe 10% of all obese people. I think the obesity problem stems from the fact that it's the elephant in the room, which is when someone is obese, we're raised NOT to make it apparent to the because of all this anti-bullying crud. If you were obese and were constantly told "You're gonna die at 35 of a heart attack." instead of the usuall "Oh you're not really large!" don't you think you'd be more active and less likely to be unhealthily large?

  4. okay, so i agree that people arent concerend with the well being of themselves and their children/ families. i blame the food companies for making their food taste so good, yet could kill us all at the same time. i think if we have more fast food restaurants like Extreme Pita, where the food tastes great and is also healthy for you, and are health check certified, then our obesity rates wouldnt be as high.

our society need to change yo!
